I use my Amex card a lot and have accumulated 900,000+ points. Some of these points come because the card is used by a company that I have a large ownership interest in and recently the CEO of that company asked if we could use some of the points to give gift certificates to employees for the holiday; which I agreed to.
Last week I went online to use the points and found that Amex had something called ecertificates which they indicate on their site: ”eCertificates are delivered by e-mail within 3 hours. Just select or confirm the eCertificate delivery option when you check out.”
OK… so I went in and went through the process of ordering ecertificates, figuring it would work like Amazon – which I’ve used in the past – and email them their certificate.
So I get to this screen and have the “a ha” moment; here is where I fill in the email address of who it gets sent to:
And this is nice…kind of like my FedEx account it lets me maintain a list of email addresses where I want to send certificates to…
So I go through the process, pay, and send everyone their ecertificates. Holiday gifts delivered. Job done.
Then people start contacting me. They don’t get a certificate… they get an email indicating where they should log in to AMEX to access the certificate – and it’s addressed to the card holder? So I ask them to send me the email they (the third party) got…and it is indeed addressed to the card holder and tells them how to log in to get their certificate.
Huh? I sent these to third parties so they could get them in 3 hours as indicated.
So, I call AMEX membership rewards this morning. They tell me their system is not set to send ecertificates to 3rd parties, but to the member. Huh? That can’t be right given the screens above. Well, how do my people get to their certificates, I ask?
The rep tells me “you have to give them your amex login and password.”
Huh? My log in and password to my AMEX account?
Yes, but since it is a specific URL they won’t see all your account info; only their certificate, she says.
But, I ask “What if they go to the normal Amex address. Won’t they get in?” Yes, she answers. If that concerns you, you can change your password after they’ve gotten their certificates.
Huh? I’m supposed to give 5 people my Amex username and password? Any other options, I ask. No, she says, that’s it. So I tell her this doesn’t make sense and I want to cancel the certificates. You can’t she says.
Ok, this can’t be right, I say, let me talk to a supervisor. First, she tells me she needs my card number. So as I run off to get the card – and when we get back I’ve been disconnected (wonder if it was intentional). Personally, I hope they have this on a recording as it is almost exactly word for word what happened and I’d love to share it.
So I call back to membership rewards and…their system cuts me off again.
So now I call back and after 4 transfers get the guy in online systems who tells me this is the way it’s set up. So I tell him that the screens above are about as misleading as I’ve ever seen – and he really doesn’t have an explanation..he tells me they are for different email addresses for yourself. Huh?
But he does tell me how I can access the PDF files for each certificate from one central place.
So I log in and see them all. 5 separate pdf files. So, I ask him, I can download each PDF (which each has a unique code and bar code inside of them) and just email each individual PDF to each person? Well, he says, he’s not sure because he’s not sure that once a PDF is opened whether it can be opened again. Huh?
So he suggests I print it and hand it to someone or I print it, scan it, and send it – rather than send the PDF itself. Huh? I once again share with him that this makes no sense and that I will just email them the PDF. He warns me that this may not work…but I decide to go this route and take my chances.
In general, I’ve been a happy AMEX customer for years and years…but this is probably the most stupid and ridiculous sequence of circumstances I think I’ve ever had with a company in the last few years.
I hope everyone has had a great holiday and I wish everyone a happy new year.
